GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

The dark haired man stood with the tall blond close by his side. They both looked silently at the scene in front of them. Two men, one blond and one brunet, lying side by side on the ground at their feet, blood pooling beneath their heads. Both dead from one gunshot to the back of the head, execution style. Murdered for who they were and what they believed in.

“Do you think anyone will even remember twenty years from now what happened here today?” the brunet asked with a heavy sadness creeping into his voice.

“I’m sure they’ll remember, buddy,” The blond said, slinging a comforting arm  around the smaller man’s shoulders. He glanced at the soft light that suddenly surrounded them. A light that slowly grew brighter. “It’s time to go.”

Sighing, the two men turned and disappeared into the light together.

TWENTY YEARS LATER

Detective Sergeant first class Rosie Dobey knelt and laid a bouquet of roses on the twin graves. Tears filled her eyes as she straightened up. Her brother, Cal, the District Attorney for L.A. County, hugged her gently, blinking back his own tears as he read the familiar inscription on the double headstone.

Me and Thee For Eternity

“We found them, Uncle Dave, Uncle Ken,” Rose said quietly. “Just like we promised we would. Cal and I found the men who killed you and they’re going to pay for what they did. We love you and we’ll always miss you.”
